Case study: Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings
BESPOKE DINING TABLE
Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings
B&H Buildings is a beautiful creative space in Clerkenwell, London. Resembling a manor house, complete with a greenhouse, large open and sunny bar, private rooms and a photography studio, it’s one of our favourite places to spend an evening. So you can imagine how thrilled we were to work on the creation of a custom-made dining table for one of their private rooms. The brief was to create a wildy beautiful wood dining table that could work as a large long dining table, but equally be split into four separate tables for smaller bookings to occupy when the room wasn’t being hired out exclusively.
We sourced a long piece of lightly pipped British elm, measuring 4m in length which would allow the team to comfortably seat 14 guests. One of the challenges was trying to hide the joins from the four split pieces, as it’s one piece of through and through wood any joins or splits in the live edge wood would be obvious and we wanted to keep the grain consistent and uninterrupted. The tables also needed to be simply fixed together so anyone could easily attach them for bigger dining parties.
The piece of elm had a number of natural holes and cracks that needed filling which we did with an unusual metal resin. Then the whole thing was hand planed and simply finished showing off the raw natural beauty of the wood.
