Inspired by | Cotehele

Cornwall is a constant source of inspiration for us when crafting our designs in the studio.

All around us nature has formed wonderful shapes, patterns and colours. In this series, we explore the places that have influenced our latest collection.

Cotehele is a stunning medieval Tudor house near Saltash and is the subject of our Inspired By series today. The house really is one of the best historic palaces to explore, with magical turrets, pretty courtyards and an exceptionally grand hall which conjures up images of Tudor banquets and a long table laden with dishes and golden goblets. When James sourced the unique piece of Scottish elm that makes up the Cotehele table, we immediately thought of this grand hall and how the sheer size of this piece of through-and-through live edge wood would make such a splendid centre-piece table for another opulent home.

What makes Cotehele such a wonderful place to spend the day, in addition to the stately house and gorgeous cafe complete with art gallery and National Trust shop, is the setting. The gardens are glorious, manicured lawns meet tumbled climbers with tunnels to explore that lead you into the steep and wild tiered valley, with river views and the viaduct in the distance. There’s acres of orchards and huge ancient trees, a working mill on a a historic quay and expansive grounds to explore. It can be busy on the weekends, but the real joy is doing a circular walk around the estate, mill and quay and then walking along the River Tamar into Calstock and stopping for lunch at the Tamar Inn.

SPECIAL EDITION

Our Cotehele table

A truly show-stopping dining table made from singular piece of rare Scottish elm with a heavy amount of pippy detail and patterns in the wood, our Cotehele table is our latest example of a unique and rare sourcing expedition. The wood has been hand-planed and simply finished to show off the raw natural beauty of the wood. As a result, the blue, green and pearlescent colours of the wood and unique patterns and effects really shine through.

  • 3.5 METRES IN LENGTH

  • 1.2 METRES WIDE

  • RARE SCOTTISH ELM

This table is particularly unique as it’s made from a through and through piece of wood, with live edges on either side, taking the Elm tree trunk and slicing vertically through. This means that you see the whole life of that tree (it hasn’t been split) detailed in the stunning markings on this table.

Over 3.5 metres in length and 1.2 metres wide, this special edition piece is pictured on our solid steel legs finished in matt black, but other legs are available.
