Materials we use

Harnessing the best of British and European wood and raw materials such as slate, design is at the core of every unique handcrafted piece and it is this love for using unusual natural materials, combined with a commitment to creating superior quality, that sets Burr & Knot apart from other furniture brands.

OAK

Oak is one of the oldest materials, used by craftsmen for hundreds of years, making it ingrained in our British heritage.

Prime oak is especially fine, strong and versatile with beautiful grain and patterns, and depending on the grade can be hand finished to really shine with burr and pipped details.

CHESTNUT

It’s true that when it’s fresh sawn Chestnut’s hard to tell from Oak.

It has a similar colour but when it dries it’s quite different. The colour is lighter and creamier than oak and the grain is a real feature, darker brown contrasting with the lighter wood.

ELM

Elm is not a common tree and it’s an even less common timber. We source extraordinary quality logs from trees that have grown in well the managed woodlands of northern England and the Scottish borders where Elm still grows healthily. It’s colouring is dull brown with distinctive varied grain and texture, and depending on the grade can have a lot of pipp and burr.

The irregular growth rings together with the cross-grained character of the wood gives it an attractive appearance and we have sourced some stunning unique pieces.

YEW

Yew is a great choice for dining and dressing tables due to its resilience. It is typically light-brown in colour and has a distinct uniform texture, often with very distinguishing features, tight grain and a smooth finish which gives it a luxurious look.

Yew wood is easy to finish, hard and strong yet flexible, meaning it’s easy to shape yet strong enough to hold its form.

SLATE

Slate is a material synonymous with Cornwall. With our slate covered roofs and mining towns such as Tintagel and Delabole, working with slate was a natural choice for us. Additionally, this hardwearing material is very low maintenance with an easy wipe clean surface. The pattern of the slate, when finely brought to life, is as visually stunning as many wood grains and due to its heat resistant qualities, you can place hot dishes straight on top, without a place mat.

WALNUT

Walnut is a gorgeous glossy chocolate brown hard wood which is wonderful for a more polished table. Walnut table tops look equally good live or straight edge and looks great when oiled to bring out it’s colour.
